Effective Strategy Coaching

Strategy coaching, quite simply, is the process of working with a coach alongside the individual (or most often the team) charged with developing a strategy for the business.

All too often the pressure of managing the day-to-day business means strategy takes a back seat. Of course, there’s always the option to ‘outsource’ the task to a strategy consultancy, to do most of the work for you. The problem with that is a lack of buy-in from the team charged with implementing the final plan.  All too often, the strategy remains a beautifully logical, bound document that sits on the shelf gathering dust. With my approach to strategy coaching, where the team develops their own strategy, I aim to deliver an end-product they are committed to and own, and which has a far better chance of being implemented.

My approach to strategy coaching leads you through a series of discussions/exercise to create a strategy that is owned by the team, and therefore more likely to be implemented. I’ll help you accomplish things that would take much longer on your own, I’ll challenge you throughout the process, to create a strategy that is better than one you could develop on your own. I’ll act as a sounding board, helping you to develop and expand your ideas: I’ll encourage you to think more broadly, to look at things differently and challenge some of the conventional wisdom of your industry.  I use my years of experience developing strategy within and for businesses, to coach you and/or your team through the process, to build a better strategy. Your strategy.

I’ll set up individual and group coaching sessions to tease out the key issues the business faces and set direction. In between sessions, I’ll take on much of the ‘heavy-lifting’ to free team members up to get on with running the business. I’ll interview clients and customers to challenge your view of your capabilities and reputation, I’ll help identify and define the set of tasks needed to deliver the strategy and pull this together into a final plan. At each stage of the process, I’ll check-in with the team to ensure we are developing your strategy, not mine.

Then, I work with you through the implementation phase, coaching task leaders through the challenges of implementing their individual tasks and holding the strategy team accountable for the delivery of the overall strategy. I also work with you to amend and adapt the strategy, as necessary, taking into account any changes on the strategic landscape in which your business operates.
